The investigation was an intelligence driven initiative into the theft of high value bicycles within one of the UK Policing areas. We were approached to develop a ‘bait’ that would allow a top of the range bicycle to be used in this particular operation.
We deployed a £2000 full suspension bike within the Harrogate policing area. It was taken shortly after deployment and transported to Leeds. We followed the RedWeb Tracker on the computer, logging particular points when it stopped.
We were able to identify that it travelled on the train to Leeds, and was stopped shortly after arriving in Leeds before moving on to an address.

Officers attended the address and located the bike in the house. A man, believed to be a ‘handler’ was arrested. Due to the RedWeb Tracker unit, we were able to determine the exact train that the bike was transported on. Viewing CCTV at the station at both Harrogate and Leeds, we obtained an image of the thief with the bike at Leeds. He has been identified as a known person who steals bikes throughout the region.
When arrested, the ‘handler’ had a lock-up garage unit set up as a full bike workshop and was selling bikes for a living. Sixteen full bikes were recovered, and enquires are taking place regards a conspiracy to steal bikes at level 2 (cross-border).
